What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

The plantar fascia is a band of tissue that runs from the heel to the toes, along the bottom of the foot. This tissue, or fascia, supports the arch and sole of your foot. When there is a lot of pressure put on this area of the foot, small tears can form, resulting in pain and inflammation. This inflammation is known as plantar fasciitis.

Plantar fasciitis can present in different ways in different people. Many people with the condition notice a sharp pain through the heel. This pain is often at its worst first thing in the morning and after exercise. Movement tends to make the pain fade away.

Causes of Plantar Fasciitis

For most people, there is more than one factor causing their plantar fasciitis. Women are more likely to acquire the condition than men. People who spend much of their time standing up are at higher risk for plantar fasciitis due to the increase in pressure on their feet throughout the day. This is also true of people who are overweight or obese.

Shoe choice can also play a role. Those who regularly wear very thin, flat shoes, or high heeled shoes, are at a higher risk for plantar fasciitis. People who have flat feet or feet with an unusually high arch also need to be careful when it comes to shoe choice. Unsupportive shoes may cause plantar fasciitis as well.
